COVER LETTER SAMPLES
THE PURPOSE OF A COVER LETTER
A cover letter is your introduction. It is a courtesy to the person receiving your resume. It tells them who you are and why you are contacting them -- for whatever reason.
Sometimes you know someone who is recommending you for a position. In that case, you would send a letter informing the recipient that a mutual acquaintance suggested they contact their company regarding a certain position.
Sometimes it is to explore opportunities. In that case, you would send a letter informing the company that you are exploring the possibility of joining their organization in a certain position, and present them with a compelling background of qualifications.
Often it is in response to an advertised job opening. In that case, you would indicate where you saw their ad and express your interest in the position.
KEY ELEMENTS OF A COVER
LETTER
Regardless of the scenario, the cover letter should start off in an interesting way, must indicate why you are contacting the company, provide an overview of your qualifications that summarizes the resume that it will be "covering," and end with a request for an interview. These are the key elements of a cover letter. They can be short, long, conservative, creative, use only paragraphs, or combine paragraphs with bulleted statements. Which ever approach you use, be sure it is professional, keeps the reader's needs in mind, sells your qualifications for the position in question, and is typo free!
